According to the law No.1 of 1974 concerning marriage in Indonesia Canticle 2(1): marriage is legitimate if it has been performed according to the laws of the respective religious beliefs of the parties concerned.

Generally, person of any nationality who would like to marry in Indonesia providing they hold one of the five religions recognized by Indonesia (Moslem, Catholic, Buddhist, Hinduism and Protestant) Marriages under Indonesian law are performed by religious minister and the catatan sipil (Civil Registrar) or by the Kantor Urusan Agama (Directorate of Islamic Religion Affairs).

In accordance with Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning marriages in Indonesia (Article 2 (1): “a marriage is legitimate if it has been performed according to the laws of the respective religious beliefs of the parties concerned.”

Any couple who are of one of the five (5) religions recognized by the Government of Indonesia as follows: Christian Protestant and Christian Catholic, Islam, Hinduism or Buddhism may be legally married in Indonesia. However, the preference is that the couple be of the same religious belief . The marriage should be registered with the district Civil Registrar and the ceremony must be performed under religious rites.

Moslem wedding doesn’t need the civil ministry to conduct the ceremony. It has a different procedure than other religion.

Leading by Moslem’s minister called Penghulu After the ceremony the Moslem Minister will give book of marriage from KUA ( Moslem Court) called Buku Nikah which is already legalized by the government and will legal in Indonesia and legal in other country as well after translated to the language where the couple coming from.
